We have been retained by a private family office in Bellevue, WA to find a director for their SFO.  The director will oversee and manage the staff as well as the business of the family office.  Their preference is to find someone in the greater Seattle/Bellevue area; however, the family office may consider relocation for an outstanding candidate.     

The family office has a small and dedicated team of key members whom the director will supervise.  Many members of this team have been with the family office long term and enjoying a collegial work environment; hence, cultural fit will be an important factor in hiring the director.  The director will be responsible for operational and financial aspects of the family office including trusts, financial management, estate planning, tax planning, and family office management. 

The family built their wealth in commercial RE investing so the director will work with and continue solid relationships with RE brokers and staff.  The director will collaborate with the trust company that has been working with the family for many years as well as with their estate planning attorney, CPA, banking, and other relationships.  Development of a succession plan for G-2 will be a priority for the director so experience in this area and governance is vital.   The director will work closely with the retiring president for the first two years as to provide a seamless transition of leadership before taking over the role.   

Requirements, Duties, and Expectations:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in HNW/UHNW tax, or UHNW planning, family office or family business leadership role (CPA, JD, LLM, CFP, MBA, etc., are highly desirable), and knowledge of commercial RE investments or tax is a plus.
  • Preserve and increase the family wealth; review investment results and insurance strategies. 
  • Learn and implement the annual plan for the family office which encompasses goals and budgets; understand how goals and budgets are measured and report results.    
  • Be a leader for office team, family members and outside vendors; create a positive culture for the family office.  
  • Work with the CFO and trustees to keep current on budgets, goals, trusts, and potential opportunities for the estate and ensure legal/compliance/tax issues are addressed.
  • Provide crisis management and family counseling/resources for family members and related individuals, as appropriate; maintain excellent relationships with all generations of the family.
